I don't fight with my kids about clothes--they wear what the want to wear about 98% of the time. (The other 2% constitutes stuff like, "Yes, you must wear a coat when it's 2 degrees outside. No, not flip flops...")
I dunno why I just told you that. Probably because it's 1 a.m., I've been working for 7 hours, and my brain is fried. And because somehow, in my delusional logic, it was a segway into my 4-year-old Layla's busting out all matter-of-fact like: "I'm wearing this skirt because I just like being stylish n' stuff."
Cue me, biting the insides of my cheeks to keep from spitting my pancake out in laughter. And surprise. But mostly laughter. You guys. Please someone come save me from my unintended parental example-setting mishaps.
Cue me again, after pancake-loss crisis averted, nodding thoughtfully and responding carefully, "Yes, I think your skirt is very stylish. I like wearing things that make me feel good, too. But what makes me feel even better is doing things that make Jesus happy."
Nice save? Nice try? Who knows. If these cute kids turn out normal, it'll all be because of their dad...and maybe a Christmas miracle or two.

I am TOTALLY going to use that answer with my daughter next time! I think I'm setting the same example for her but at least we know they're paying attention to a lot of what we're doing...which could be good or bad. It makes me more aware of when I say things that are self-critical. I don't want her to develop THAT habit.
So true. Love how you turned it around to Jesus. Two bonus points to you, girl! :)
Now how can you not laugh at that? The other day one of my seven-year old twins commented on my belt. Apparently it wasn't "cool." Or something. I was too busy cracking up.
You're doing great in thew 30x30 - I love all your outfits!

12 & 13 are my favorites!
Normal is boring, anyway! Keep on being awesome and your kids will follow suit. :)
Perfect answer! I am absolutely stealing that when B starts pulling stuff like that on me, which might be sooner rather than later, considering she likes hanging out in my closet, trying on scarves and gloves already at 16-months.
I love the day 13 look. Thanks for the comment on my blog!

This story makes me smile.
I think you mean "segue." Weren't you an English major?

@Amy: Okay, you're going to die, but I NEVER realized/knew the correct spelling (I didn't even know enough to know I was spelling it wrong) until yesterday, when I was reading someone else's blog, and I saw her correct spelling. Hah! *sheepish*
SO CUTE! I loved reading this! :)
So I'm reading back through your old posts and want to comment on them all but since I just don't have that kind of time 'll pick just a few. You're super cute. I have to try the bright tights and neutral outfit. I am so a neutral girl and that's a sharp idea.
