dark brown with black: too close for comfort?

So I'm getting lazy in my old age. Meh.
booties: steve madden. socks: don't recall. skirt & jacket: kohl's. belt: f21. watch: target.

A few things I'd love to bring up here, and I'd love your feedback if you have a thought or opinion. Which is code for: This is a test, kids. Get out your #2 pencils. (ahem)

(1) Socks with this skirt. The skirt is verrry business-esque (try saying that 10 times fast. not a chance), and I wanted to make it more casual and fun. AKA, the knee-high socks bandit rides again. Mistake or Awesome?

(2) Brown socks and black skirt. Here's the thing: I didn't want all black-blackness in the ensemble. Sometimes I think that's a little harsh. But these (the socks and skirt) are close enough in color, kind of, that it almost looks like I made a mistake and unintentionally grabbed brown socks thinking "no one'll notice..." Which, yes, it might be a mistake (that's what I'm trying to determine with you all), but it wasn't unintentional. So. Socks/skirt coloration conundrum: Mistake or Awesome? Or somewhere in-between?

(3) Pencil skirt as a stay-at-home mom. I think I made a mistake in selecting my 30x30 items, because 3 of the 7 bottoms are pencil skirts. I adore them. But they're just not that practical to wear so often when I crawl around the house playing "here kitties" with my 2-year-old, or when I have to do laundry and am having to lean waaaay over to scoop out that stubborn sock in the back of the dryer, or other odds and ends of activities that fill my life. What do you guys say: pencil skirt as regular at-home attire: Mistake or Awesome? Or just plain stupid?

(4) Lack of necklace. I had one on originally and then took it off because I love this belt buckle so much, and I felt like the two were competing. But I do feel a little bare/plain. So. Mistake or Awesome?

Anything else that catches your eye that you either like about this ensemble, or that you think would've made it better? Seriously. This one needs help.

Happy Tuesday!

I think you look so pulled together no one would even question the slight color variation. And I personally think the lack of necklace was a good choice.

You did such a good job choosing your 30 items - each outfit looks so different from the other!

I love you blog. I have been following it for about a month and it is so fun to read. You are very clever. I didn't notice all this stuff with your outfit until you pointed it out. You seem like the kind of person that could and would rock a brown paper bag. Do you have a scarf that could pull this all together? Maybe put it in your hair as a headband and make it feel more intentional? Who knows, i think its cute as it. Have a great day. Chrissy

There's nothing I love more than a skinny belt and a pencil skirt - cute!

1 and 2) Love the knee socks! The color is great. I haven't tried them, but they look awesome on everyone else.

3) Pencil skirts are always a good idea.

4) I think this works with or without a necklace.

And also, I love your hair!

I love this outfit and must know what color lipstick you are wearing??

Personally, I do love the pencil skirt, but I could see how it might cause some problems running around with the kids. Sometimes, I think anything but sweatpants causes problems running around with kids...

Which would explain why the only reason I ever get out of my sweatpants when I'm at home is when I'm scared my neighbors might stop by for a visit.

"Here kitties" sounds like an awesome game. I am jealous.

And I think you should go on and rock the pencil skirts. I love them (I do work in an office, but still). You look so polished and chic in them, I bet all of the kitties come running to you. (Ok, I have no idea why cats would like pencil skirts. It just seems like they might?)

I love your ensemble! Pencil skirt not that SAHM practical, but looks so good!

You look so tall and slim! I don't think there's anything questionable about what you're wearing. I like brown and black together - it's unexpected, and looks great with your jacket. And who says stay-at-home moms can't wear pencil skirts? They might cause some technical difficulties when retrieving socks and errant toddlers, but if you're nimble enough to navigate in them go for it.

I get what you mean with the pencil skirt. I wear mine all the time, even though it's sooo not practical for my daily life. =p

1. The socks & skirt I'm loving. Gives it a fun look :)

2. Miscoloration I hate to say. I could never do brown socks with a black skirt but quite honestly, I didn't even notice till you pointed it out so it couldnt look all that bad!

3. Pencil skirts are definitely one of my fave pieces. I am a stay at home momma too so I get why they are not practical for you. I NEVER wear them.

4.Lack of necklace, good choice!

I don't see a thing wrong with this. Very conservative with a bit of flair! I'm liking it :)

I could absolutely try and recreate any one of your outfits.Lots of inspiration here

I can't believe you think this outfit needs help. I think it's fabulous!

So here we go:
1. Socks with the skirt = awesome. I'm wondering if I can pull that off at my office. It's not against code, per se, but it might come across as too edgy and sexy. But I love it!
2. Brown socks and black skirt = I'm not sure because they honestly look the same color on my computer. I'd shoot for a lighter brown if you want more contrast.
3. Pencil skirt as a stay-at-home mom = up to you! I don't wear them when I'm home with my daughter, mostly because I wear them at work instead. But I might if I didn't work. They're cute!
4. Necklace = it depends. If it's a small necklace, it would work. Not sure about a long one. That belt IS really cute!

Personally, while there might be some practicality issues with pencil skirts, I applaud the bravery it takes to look amazing and still be a Mom. I've seen women crawl around playing hide and seek in pencil skirts still looking every inch a lady. I think it sets a good example. :-D Keep it up!

I really, really like this outfit. Lack of necklace, brown socks and all. But if the pencil skirt is problematic for kid-chasing, then maybe save it for a day when you're running errands instead or whatever. Still, though: soooo cute!

i LOVE your blazer!! and the socks and shoes!!

The shapes work for me, but the color doesn't. I think this would be super cute with a pop of saturated color in the socks, though.

1. Socks with this skirt look great! Pulls it a little out of the business-esque range and a little into the school-uniform-ish range. : P Verrry cute!

2. In the pictures (at least on my monitor) the skirt looks navy and the socks look black. So it is very hard for me to answer this question. However, the way the colors look on my screen doesn't seem like a mistake. Usually I DO NOT advocate dark brown and black together, I very much avoid the mix, but I think (again, I can't see the colors right, so I'm mostly guessing) that the socks are see-through enough that the colors don't conflict.

3. Pencil skirts are never, in any situation, under any circumstances, a mistake. Unless you get uncomfortable or inconvenienced in wearing them. In that case, change. But I love pencil skirts as much as you thought you did while picking your three skirts. : P And you look GREAT in them!

4. I don't think this outfit needs a necklace at all. I mean, I have no problem with the piling on of unnecessary accessories, but you certainly don't look bare. The lapels of the blazer (which looks great as a shirt, btw!) and the cute-cute-cute-SO-dang-cute belt buckle definitely take care of the outfit.

Extra credit: I don't think this needs some help. I actually think it could easily go into my inspiration folder. I love the look of the blazer with pencil skirt, with a bit of a sense of humor added in the cute belt and high socks. And I love the booties, though I cannot wear them. Lucky you. One more thing: what's the book/postcard thingy you're holding?

Note: as you can see, I LOVE answering test questions in long, full sentences. I'm sorry that you (and all teachers who have ever asked me essay questions) that you had to slog through my EXCESSIVELY FULL response. : P

This is my favorite look of yours yet! It makes you look so chic and young (in a good way) all at once! And it really defines your figure nicely.

Ok. I love the socks with that skirt. I'd never had thought to do it but it looks great and super great on your lovely legs. Brown and black is totally awesome. It works so well together. And lastly pencil skirts, I do it all the time and then throw in heels. My little one has a running advantage because I can't keep up if he tries to make a break for it I’ll get him in the end.

i don't thinking colors not "matching" matters one iota. just go for it!

and here is my secret. and i'm planning a blog post about it(if my life ever slows down in the next 3 years. expect it 2014). i am an anchorwoman. i bet you didn't know that. an anchorwoman without a desk job. or a journalism degree. it's more like anchorwoman style. i put together my outfits and then i take off the bottom half, put on a apron and sweatpants and do my mom stuff. that's how i work heels, skirts, or fussy pants when i am mothering. it could be cheating, but my kids are more important than my outfits, right? so top half is tv ready, bottom half can still crawl around on the floor. then when i walk out the door, i just have to slip the bottom half back on.
longest comment ever. you win.

I like the socks on you, and I can't even tell they are brown. I like pencil skirts, and they look classy. If I'm cleaning, and running around they are hard to wear. I think their still awesome though. The lack of necklace if fine, you look awesome.

I think the outfit is great except (not on the list) I find those shoes look a little awkward with the socks ? I don't know like maybe they are too closed in ? They seem to chop your leg at the ankle. And then you've created 3 sight lines...the ankle...the top of the sock...and the hem of the skirt. Nobody else mentions it so could be just my own weird idea. I think a chunky platform heel may have worked better ? Everything else is perfectly beautiful.
