we all live in a greenish-blue submarine...

sandals: don't recall. skirt: gap. shirt: gift. watch: target.

So, solids & color-blocking are hot now. Which is great--who doesn't love color, especially in big chunks? It's like eating a milkshake with enormous hunks of butterfinger in there. Which, actually, is a point of contention between my adorable husband and myself. He prefers his milkshakes to be smooth, flavored ice cream. Me? I want them to be a crunchy, chunky food group.

I know. It's a huge marital compromise when we have to share a milkshake. Frankly, it's a miracle we've made it almost ten years together. But there are solutions to every problem, and this obstacle in our marriage is no different: Fortunately for us, we both firmly believe that sharing ice cream is for wimps, and we get our own.

Problem solved. Not to brag, but I think we're masters in diplomacy. It's a shame we're not in politics. And also a shame that politicians don't deal in ice cream.

So. Solid color-blocking. Awesome and all, but this girl [Editor's note: Two thumbs pointing backwards at myself] loves prints. Solution? Block together prints of the same color. Which, when that color happens to be a greenish blue like what dominates this ensemble, doubles as a costume for a walking piece of seaweed. Total win-win.

 Happy Monday.

a simple outfit for a simple day

sandals: don't recall. shorts: gap cutoffs. shirt: thrifted. bracelet: burntsiena designs.

Today I pulled mom-duty and instigated a morning chores regimen for my children. I was anticipating much resistance, but it backfired in a glorious way. Exhibit A: my 7-year-old son, who randomly selected "vacuum the stairs" from the chores jar, started shrieking with delight. "THIS IS THE BEST CHORE EVER! THE BEST DAY EVER! HOW DID I GET SO LUCKY?!?!?!!!!"

Sweet. The kid likes to vacuum. Note to self...

Today I really didn't want to get dressed. In fact, it wasn't until about 4 p.m. that I actually did get dressed. PJs for most of the day, because I needed to shower but didn't want to shower until I had worked out but didn't want to work out. I finally busted out some sort of sweat-provoking moves around 3 p.m. Which is sad and embarrassing but, I'm going to be brutally honest here folks, kind of awesome to do every once in a while.

Speaking of PJs...once in college I babysat a bunch of my nephews for about a week. They were young, and I became pretty engrossed in the world of diapers and spaghetti-o's. [Editor's note: Ew on those things.] Fast-forward to a conversation I was having with my roommate on the night I got back to my apartment, wherein I said something to the effect of, "I'm in for watching a movie, just let me get my jammies on first."

I'll never forget the one-raised-eyebrow she gave me. "'Jammies,' huh." Yep. Jammies. Or jammers, if you're so inclined. I was just that cool in college. Makes you wish you roomed with me, doesn't it.

Happy Monday.

elastic-waisted and loving it

shoes: don't recall. skirt & shirt: gap. belt & necklace: forever21. bracelet: burntsiena designs. earrings: gift/homemade.

Raise your hand if you're (a) built like a box or (b) know someone who is. Chances are good that none of you raised your hand. Not because neither A nor B qualifies, but rather because you're thinking to yourself, "she can't see me, I'm not raising my hand" or "man, that is some good mango-pineapple salsa I'm eating here" or "zzzzzzzzzzz."

This little ensemble is one I like to call, "The Little Box That Should." It's an inspiring tale of a girl who, despite lacking much by way of feminine curves, managed to put together a semi-girlish ensemble that embodies a bead-wearing-free-spirit-bent-on-reminding-suburbanites-to-save-the-rainforests. Notice my freshly-showered (i.e. wet) hair? It's 'cause there's no electricity in the forest for a blow dryer. Even my sandals look like tree roots.

So. Full skirts supposedly give square-built women some hips. I don't know that this actually is the case here. And the belt cutting my torso exactly in half doesn't do much to elongate my frame. But for some reason, despite what it isn't, I'm loving what this outfit is: a t-shirt and an elastic-waisted anything, perfect prep for Thanksgiving feasting. Sure, I'm four months early, but I like to be prepared.

So. Pass me a pie and turn up the TV, will ya?

Happy Tuesday.

a proponent of the maxi dress and, you guessed it, cilantro.

shoes: don't recall (like, 20 years old. srsly). dress: forever21. necklace: gift. bracelet: burntsiena designs.

Several of you have asked me to make my photos larger. Because I'm super awesome and accommodating (yep), I'm giving this new photo format a shot, and we'll see how it goes. I figure there are pros and cons to everything, and this is no exception.
Pros: You can see me and my outfits better.
Cons: You can see me and my outfits better. Hmmm...

Today is Modly Chic's Friend Friday! Today's topic is: labels.

1. As someone who writes/blogs about fashion, have you placed yourself into some sort of blogging category? Yes, I think so. The purpose of this little blog is to document my style decisions (okay, fine, and rant about random stuff). Sometimes I add a HomeStyle post or two, but by and large, people coming to this blog know what to expect: Me. Kinda crazy. But dressed.

2. What keeps you from or encourages you to label yourself as a certain kind of blogger? I like to know, in general, what I'm getting into when I click onto a site/blog. I assume others feel the same way, so I'm fine to label this blog as a "style" or "fashion" blog...annnnd because I couldn't find the category "lame & random" anywhere. Plan B it is.

3. When picking blogs to read and follow are you drawn to ones that indicate a certain group or way of thinking/being? Yes and no. I enjoy reading about things/people I can relate to or have experience with (for example, I like reading blogs of other moms and also modest style blogs). But I also enjoy (equally, oddly enough) blogs in which, at least on the surface, I don't have lots in common with the author. In general, though, I'm ultimately drawn to blogs that make me laugh and/or think. But not both at the same time, usually, because that's kinda like having milk come out my nose. Hurts.

4. Do you think there are benefits in labeling yourself or others? Sure. It can be helpful and useful.

5. Agree or Disagree - We're all just people; we don't need all the labels. Okay, now I'm worried that I've approached this topic the "wrong" way...but I honestly don't have hangups about blogging labels. Sure, there's more than meets the eye in everything, and there's no one label that fully encompasses any item ('cept for sweet pickles, and the appropriate label would be: "disgusting"). I think we all need to approach and add labels with caution, but I do believe they help the organized world go round.

That, and cilantro. Mmmmmm...

Happy Friday!

this and also that...

sandals & pearls: don't recall. pants & shirt: gap. nylon belt: american eagle outfitters. watch: target.

Sometimes when I type "blogger" I accidentally type it "blooger." I think the world would be vastly different if "bloog" were indeed the new "blog."

But. I'm wearing these sandals because I'm not going outside today. Also, I'm aware that my torso looks abnormally short. Also, this outfit looked better in my head. Also, how did it even look okay in my head, since I'm pairing leather sandals with a nylon belt with pearls? Also, the wardrobe malfunction of the front of my shirt isn't helping matters. Also, yes, I really am that pasty pale. Also, I'm not sure how that J.Crew catalog became an unwitting prop in these photos. Also, despite all this, I'm completely comfortable and okay with how I look.

Also, I think I'm wearing out my welcome at the Also household, so I'll be on my way.

Happy Saturday!
