Pastel Plaid & Colored Tights

This is what I wore to church yesterday:

black boots: Kohl's
tights: gift
denim pencil skirt: J. Crew
gold skinny belt: J. Crew
pastel plaid buttonup: American Eagle Outfitters

Annnnd, in true Forrest Gump fashion, "That's all I have to say about that."

Which reminds me: Did you guys realize that Forrest Gump was made in 1994? That's almost 20 YEARS AGO?!?!?!!! Man. Not to go all granny on you with the uphill-both-ways-through-waist-high-snow and all that, but for real. I can't believe I'm getting so old.

But whatever. I'll enjoy my long hair for the next few weeks of youth until I'm forced to chop it and perm it and dye it blue. Just kidding. I would look terrible with a perm.

Happy Monday.

tweed, glorious tweed

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess stay-at-home mom who started a blog about the normal (and weird, if I'm being honest) stuff she wore every day. She enjoyed it. Then she got busy with other important stuff in life and she abandoned it for a month. Then she realized that there was a happy medium that could be reached.

Just like how she now buys the medium size bag of pnut m&ms instead of the XL and instead of abstaining from them altogether.

The end.

Confession: Because you probably couldn't tell, that story was autobiographical. But the m&m part just shows you how much I've matured in the past month, right guys? I know. It does your hearts proud.

So. It's officially Fall. And that's the time I break out any and everything pumpkin-spice-scented and make soup and dream about Fallish stuff to wear. Like cardigans. And tweed. And, sure, tweed cardigans. Which is so super nerdy, you guys, but I just can't help it. Love.

Happy Tuesday.

Not hugely original or inspiring, but it's what I'm wearing. So.

shoes: head over heels. jeans: kohl's. belt: thrifted. shirt: gap. cardigan: j.crew. watch: target.

Knock knock.
Who's there?
Pinky.
Pinky who?
Pinky who lives in a pack of diapers!!!
[enter hysterical pint-sized laughter]

Repeat. Including the hysterical laughter. Repeat some more. Repeat as a monologue when the adult party refuses to "answer the door" anymore. Repeat to siblings, repeat to barbies, repeat to strangers and neighbors. Repeat over ice cream, repeat over vegetables, repeat over strawberries dipped in powdered sugar. Repeat repeat repeat.

You all want to come to my house now, don't you, and befriend and swap jokes with my 2-year-old. I just know you do. My husband and I can't figure out why she loves this joke so much, other than the fact that she made it up herself. (No kidding. I mean, the punchline is clever and all...) (Oh. Wait. Nope. No it's not.)

Love it or not on the 10-milionth go-round, I'm afraid Pinky is here to stay.

Happy Thursday.

p.s. If you happen to meet up with diaper-dwelling Pinky, please pass on this message: no.one's.home.
p.p.s. I know my ensemble is winter-esque and unapplicable to many of you in warmer temps. But, despite the sunshine outside, it's downright chilly around here, and I spent my pre-dressed morning goose-bumpily all over. So. Warm & cozy it is.

Guest Post: Melissa on Keeping it Profesh...AND Cool (great tips!)

[Editor's note: Hey guys! I'm on vacation with my family (destination hint here). Although I'm unable to post right now, some of my most favorite stylish, intelligent, and entertaining bloggers have graciously agreed to guest post. You won't be disappointed...'cept maybe when I get back into town...]

Today's guest poster is the stylish professional Melissa from A Working Mom's Closet, and I love: her down-to-earth style considerations and tips, her totally obvious love for her daughter, her sincere interest in other people's insights and opinions, her fabulous work-appropriate creative personal style. Thanks for posting today, Melissa! This kind of makes me want to live in Florida...could you get me one of those sip-lemonade-by-the-pool deals? Thanks a mil.
-Brittney

Hi everyone! I’m Melissa from A Working Mom’s Closet. When Brittney asked if I would guest post for her, my first thought was YAY! My second thought was “Um...but what do I say?”

{If you want to know a secret, part of the reason I started a style blog is because as much as I wanted to write a mommy blog, I couldn’t come up with anything to talk about. So I figured I would post pictures of my work outfits and call it a blog. It’s working so far. Until someone asks me to guest post and I break out in hives because you want me to come up with CONTENT?
And for a blog written by someone as cute and funny and interesting as Brittney?

Oh, the pressure.}

Since I am a working mom (clearly I’m not all that creative in the blog title area), and I live in Florida where it’s HOT pretty much all year long, I decided to talk about how to dress for work when you’d really rather be outside sipping drinks by the pool. Here are some of my favorite warm weather options.

Dresses: Personally, I find dresses to be the most flattering of all pieces. Pants, slacks, and jeans (don’t ask me what the difference is between pants and slacks, but I’m sure there is one) have their place in the world when it’s cold, but I don’t like how they encase each of my legs; I feel like my thighs end up looking huge when they’re defined that way. Dresses are easy and breezy, they’re one piece (usually) and can be found in a variety of sleeve options. Not to mention the fact that they can be worn across multiple seasons if you just layer on a sweater and add some tights!

Short-sleeved Blazers: Let’s face it; blazers are power pieces and they’re not going away. I don’t even want them to go away, I like them! But wearing a wool skirt suit in 90 degree weather is not an option. Enter the short-sleeved blazer! They’re so versatile and come in tons of bright colors to add some fun to an otherwise boring black suit, plus you can throw them over a tee to dress up a weekend outfit, too.

Tanks: Don’t get me wrong - I am NOT saying that tank tops by themselves are office-appropriate. Because they’re not. However...when worn underneath one of the aforementioned short-sleeved blazers, they can keep you cool and comfortable while looking just as polished as any other type of shirt underneath a blazer.

Up-dos: I’ll be honest; my hair is usually left down. Because I’m lazy. However, if I had more time, energy and creativity, I would absolutely style my hair up. Up-dos have an air of professionalism to them and can help keep your face and neck cooled off as well.

Cardigans: These are similar to blazers in that they add polish to outfits and many are made with short sleeves to keep you cool, too. They’re also great for those chilly board meeting rooms!
There you have it! Those are my recommendations for how to maintain professionalism and modesty even during those sweltering summer months.

Do you have any tips or tricks that I didn’t think about?

Thanks Brittney for letting me take over your blog for a post! It’s been fun! Next time I’ll bring cookies.

How to roll (or "cuff") your jeans

I've been thinking about how to stretch my wardrobe these days, as the weather transitions to spring, but it's not quite warm enough for shorts and barren legs. 'Cept when mine go un-shorn. THEN I'm ready for my "Hello, My Name is Bigfoot" badge and a one-way ticket to an arctic forest, pants or no.

You didn't need to read that. Sorry. But what you DO need to read are some ideas on the ins and outs and ups and downs of cuffing a pair of jeans (puns absolutely intended). Because, at least where I live, these simple little tricks make a pair of jeans work for 3 out of the 4 seasons. 75%. Not too shabby, if you ask me. The Lakers would've killed for even half that stat in the Playoffs. Poor, embarrassed, tall multi-millionaires.

(ahem) But. Cuffed jeans. As I see it, we've got a few options:

(1) Roll the hem once, just an inch or two:
PROS: Shortens the jean so you don't step on (and, consequently, prematurely wear out) the back hem; promotes a slightly more casual, functional vibe; shows off your shoes; legline still looks long.
CONS: Can look like you're trying to hide the fact that you're too lazy to hem your jean; sometimes not bold enough to be a style statement; can unroll easily and end up just looking sloppy; shows off your shoes (choose shoes with care when cuffing, because they'll get tons more face-time).

(2) Or you can roll the hem a few times to just above your ankles, keeping the roll-height fairly short.
or
PROS: Creates a fun, approachable twist to an ensemble; best when jeans are skinny and/or pegged (in my opinion); adds a feminine touch to a denim-based look.
CONS: Can visually shorten the legline; draws attention to shoes (make sure your shoes are worth checking out); must be balanced out with an interesting top but not one that's overpowering; not the best look for those who lack defined ankles (full- or knee-lengths are best, to lengthen your legline).

(3) Back to one cuff, but a mid-sized one -- 3-6 inches, also just above your ankle.
PROS: It's a whimsical cuff that exudes a feeling of youth and energy; adds detail to an otherwise mundane ensemble; most adorable when paired with sneakers (my opinion); a good balance to those with curvier hips.
CONS: Can totally shorten a legline; when done with jeans whose wrong-side-out significantly contrasts, it'll visually chop your leg into three distinct (dare I say "stumpy"?) parts.

(4) Another one-cuffer, but this time a giant one -- anything taller than 6 inches (I call this a "chunky cuff").
PROS: Suuuuper laissez-faire vibe; a fun look that doubles as a functional cooling mechanism if you're stuck somewhere hot; can sometimes lengthen a legline (especially paired with open-top shoes) because your brain says, "woah! multiple inches of leg comin' out the ends of those jeans. those gams must be miles long." That's right. Miles. Your brain will translate inches into miles. Don't question...just roll with it.
CONS: Jeans leg must be straight or slightly flared to pull this off -- chunky-cuffing a tapered jean will make the jean leg oddly bumpy (because the cuffed part squeezes the wider calf part of the jean), while doing this with a flared jean usually doesn't "stick", it just flops around; jeans can't be too long, or the cuffed-up part will be super tall but the end of the jean will only hit just above your ankle, creaing an uncomfortable and unbalanced proportion; amount of leg seen out the pant leg should be similar to the size of the chunky cuff.

Whaddya think? Do you cuff your jeans? If so, what's your favorite way to do it? If not, how come? Do you think it's a flattering look or no? Is the word "cuff" just too weird to handle? (Yes, especially when repeated 10 times fast.)

Happy Wednesday!

Sir Mix-A-Lot (wait, does anyone seriously remember that?)

Woah. Funky lighting alert. Nothing else is funky, though. Just the lighting. Yep.
shoes: american eagle outfitters. jeans: kohl's. shirt: vintage. cardigan: gap. scarf: gift from sweden. belt: thrifted (american eagle). watch: target.
It doesn't look the best in these photos, but for the record: This is one of my favorite outfits. Ever.
Hey guys. Not only is today a perfect day for wearing two types of stripes, floral, polka dots, AND metallic (it said so in my horoscope. practically.), but it's also Friend Friday! Today's topic is one of my favorites: Fitness & Fashion.

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why? Yep. I run. Because I like to eat but my metabolism is turning granny on me, I like my husband to be bigger than me (not an easy task, if you know my husb), and I feel better about myself when I exercise. Not necessarily in that order, but that's how the fingers typed it, so that's how it will remain.

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image? Absolutely. I've become less obsessed with how I look (as in, the size of my legs, the bulge of my belly, etc.) because I'm doing what I can to be healthy. I'll never be a waif, but I've decided this: A body that does what I put mine through is a body worth respecting.

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion? Eh, I don't give one single brain cell of thought about what I wear unless it involves weather-related decisions...but I don't go to gyms, I just run outside. I don't even put makeup on, do my hair, or anything. What I'm trying to say is...y'know all those Bigfoot sightings? They were probably just me, out for a winter jog.

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness? Maybe there used to be. Like, when my mom was in school, they had to wear skirts to gym class and wasn't allowed to do the stuff the boys were doing. I think that, these days, so many fitness options are available that it's all about choosing what works for you to get/stay fit.

5.  Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal. Run a certain 100-mile race with my sister. She's already done it twice; I paced her for a snort 14-mile leg of it one time, and now I want to do it. Our family is convinced we are both missing a marble or two...and we can't exactly argue. Meh.

Happy Friday!

mr. golden sun appears to be permanently indisposed...yellow sweater to the rescue

shoes: steve madden. pants: gap. shirt: j.crew. cardigan: old navy. bracelet: downeast basics. pin: don't recall. earrings: hawaii.
I'm looking for it, guys. My dignity, that is. Searching hard...
Drat. It's gone. Quite possibly forever.
Dignity or no... it's Friend Friday! This week's topic is among my favorites: Gratitude. Here goes:

1. When it comes to me personally – I owe a lot of who I am to: My parents and siblings, natch, for their sculpting of me through my childhood years. My college roommates during those pivotal college years, who helped me figure out what really is -- and isn't -- important to me and my life. (For example: ISN'T: yellow landrovers, caffeine, and pleasing everybody. IS: loyalty, laughter, and clean cookware.) And, forever and ever amen, my husband and children.

2. When it comes to me professionally – I owe a lot of who I am to: My English professors who embraced my uniqueness and let me -- encouraged me to -- fly, the Grant Lab (my first career-centered job, right out of college, which taught me the ins and outs of real-life professional technical writing and set me up for the kid-friendly, flexible freelance writing I do now), and my husband whose support has been unwavering and perspective reassuring.

3. When it comes to the art of blogging, I’m grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots: Heidi, who without knowing it has set the example for me of completely being ones own glorious and unique self on blog (her blogging resolutions for the New Year 2011 were what sealed the deal), Jill, a stranger who took a chance and asked to feature me when I first started my blog and who will always have a place in my e-heart, and (sincerely) all you style bloggists who are genuine and who put yourselves out there because you love what you do. It's inspiring. Annnnd...my husband, who smiles and supports me even though blogging & "style" per se aren't exactly his thang. (Ew. Gross. Pretend I didn't just type that.)

4. One blogging challenge I’m grateful happened because it made me stronger was… Adding Disqus. Ran into many problems installing it on my blog for some reason, but I learned some html stuff and patience and how to curse in my head but not out loud. All very applicable life skills.

5. To my readers, I’d like to say… Thanks, all four of you, for putting up with me, with my sarcasm, with my text-heavy posts, with my outfit blunders, with my silliness, and with my amateur self- or kid-snapped photos. Thanks for your comments, for making me laugh, and for following and visiting often. I think you're pretty great.

Happy Friday!
